How Our Multiplicative Scoring Model Works
GetATSReady isn't just a simple keyword counter. The score is a local estimate of keyword overlap, section headers, numbers in bullets, and layout risk. It is not a live connection to Workday, Taleo, or Greenhouse.
Most legacy resume checkers use an additive scoring model: they give you 50 points for keywords, 25 points for structure, and 25 points for metrics, resulting in a perfect 100. However, this is fundamentally flawed. If your resume uses a multi-column design, complex tables, or a heavy Canva template, the ATS parser physically cannot read the text. It scrambles the words into an unreadable "word salad."
To solve this, GetATSReady uses a Multiplicative Scoring Model. First, we calculate a baseline score using three core metrics:
- Keyword overlap (40%): We compare words, plurals, and a short list of close variants between your resume and the job description.
- Structure (20%): We check for standard section headers a parser expects (e.g., "Professional Experience" instead of "My Journey").
- Impact & metrics (20%): We look for numbers in bullets and strong action verbs.
- Format / layout risk (20%): Multi-column, table-heavy, or image-like layouts lower this part and can discount keyword credit.
Next, we apply the Template Compliance Multiplier. We simulate the PDF/DOCX extraction process. If we detect multi-column layouts, hidden tables, or unreadable graphical elements, your Template Compliance score drops. This acts as a direct discount factor on your baseline score. For example, if your keyword match is perfect (100) but your template compliance is only 40%, your final ATS score will accurately reflect that the ATS system can only read 40% of your resume.
GetATSReady helps you see parsing and keyword gaps before you apply. It cannot guarantee interviews or that a specific ATS will rank you the same way.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the scoring work?
The score multiplies keyword overlap by a template factor. Multi-column and table-heavy files are treated as a parse risk, so the keyword portion is discounted. A weak template can cut the score sharply. The number is an estimate, not a result from Workday or Taleo.
Is this tool really free and private?
The free scan runs in your browser. The resume file is not uploaded for that scan. The page also loads Google Analytics, Google AdSense, and error reporting. There is no account. If you type an email after a score, that address and the score are sent. A paid review is separate, and that form is how a file is sent.
What file formats are supported?
We currently support PDF and DOCX (Microsoft Word) files. We recommend using PDF format as it preserves formatting better and is widely accepted by ATS systems.
Does the file name and size matter?
Yes. Many older ATS platforms (like Workday, Taleo, or Greenhouse) have strict limits. We recommend keeping your file under 2MB and your filename under 30 characters. Avoid special characters in the filename; use a simple Firstname_Lastname_Resume.pdf format to ensure universal compatibility.
How accurate is the ATS score?
The score uses a multiplicative model. Template compliance discounts the keyword score when the file looks multi-column or table-heavy, because those layouts are a common parse risk. With a job description, the score combines keyword overlap (40%), structure (20%), impact and metrics (20%), and format/layout risk (20%); template issues can further discount the keyword portion. This is an estimate. It is not Workday, Taleo, or iCIMS, and it does not predict how those products will rank you.
What score should I aim for?
First, ensure your Template Compliance is 85%+ — a broken template will tank your score regardless of how good your content is. With a clean template, aim for 75+ overall (good), 85+ (excellent). The single biggest fix most candidates can make is switching from a multi-column or Canva-style template to a clean single-column ATS-friendly one.
How do I improve my ATS score?
In order of impact: (1) Fix your template — switch to a clean single-column layout if Template Compliance is below 85%; this is the highest-ROI fix. (2) Add missing keywords from the job description naturally into your experience section. (3) Use standard section headers (Professional Experience, Education, Skills, Certifications) — creative names like "My Journey" confuse ATS categorization. (4) Add quantifiable achievements with numbers and percentages.
Can I use this for multiple job applications?
Absolutely! We recommend tailoring your resume for each job application. Paste the specific job description, analyze your resume, and make targeted adjustments. There's no limit on how many times you can use the tool.
Does this tool check my contact information?
Yes — the tool now validates your contact section automatically. It checks for a valid email format, a phone number with at least 10 digits, and a properly formatted LinkedIn URL (must include /in/your-username). A broken LinkedIn URL like linkedin.com/yourname (missing /in/) is one of the most common resume mistakes — ATS software and recruiters click LinkedIn to verify candidates, so a broken link is a silent dealbreaker. Any issues appear at the top of your action plan.
Does this work for all industries?
Yes. Matching is word overlap plus a short list of close variants. Paste any job description. The field does not matter.
What is the Raw Text Preview?
The Raw Text Preview shows you exactly what an ATS parser "sees" when it extracts text from your resume file. If you see scrambled words, merged sentences, or "word salad," it means your resume template is structurally broken. Many creative, multi-column, or graphic-heavy templates (like those from Canva) look beautiful to humans but are unreadable to ATS software. If the preview looks bad, your application is likely being rejected automatically because the system cannot find your keywords or experience.

How does the SmartRecruiters ATS parse resumes?
SmartRecruiters uses semantic parsing to extract your contact info, work history, and skills. It can struggle with multi-column layouts, headers/footers, and complex graphics. A standard single-column chronological resume works best with SmartRecruiters.
Does SmartRecruiters score or rank resumes automatically?
Yes, like many ATS platforms, SmartRecruiters can surface candidates who have a high keyword overlap with the job description. It is crucial to tailor your resume using the exact keywords found in the SmartRecruiters application posting.
